Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is Teeth whitening?

It's a bleaching process that removes the stains in enamel and dentine of the teeth.
  • What causes discolouration?

The most common causes are ageing, consumption of staining substances like coffee, tea, cola, tobacco and red wine, trauma, nerve degeneration and old restorations. During teeth formation, consumption of tetracycline or excessive fluoride may also result in discolouration.
  • Who can benefit from teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is suitable for people with healthy teeth and gums who do have veneers or crowns on front teeth.
  • Which treatments are available?

smilestudio provides 2 main types of treatments: wy10 'Laser' Chairside (one hour) whitening and wy10 Trays Whitening (home whitening). Please refer to the treatments section for more information.
  • wy10 Laser or Home whitening?

wy10 Laser is a one-hour chair-side treatment that leaves teeth up to 10 shades whiter with zero sensitivity. With home whitening, you follow a simple procedure at home, attaining optimum results after about two weeks. Teeth are left up to 8 shades whiter after treatment. It is the more cost-effective option.
  • Which whitening system do you use?

We use the wy10 system with a patented activator to give faster and better results. From our experience, it works better than the Zoom!® system we used before,  The Zoom system is known to cause sensitivity whereas the wy10 system with its zero-sensitivity technology is comfortable for the customer. Scientific studies also showed that the wy10 gel is more effective than the Zoom!® gel.
  • Do the treatments have any effects on crown, veneer or white fillings?

No, the treatments do not change the intrinsic colour of these man-made materials. However, surface stains will be removed.
  • How do the treatments work?

Both treatments use an oxygen releasing whitening gel, which is placed against the surface of your teeth. As oxygen enters the enamel and dentine, it whitens the coloured substances. Only the teeth colour is made lighter; the structure of the teeth is unchanged.
  • How long do the results last?

Results last for up to two years, when further treatment will be needed.
  • Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes! Research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with hydrogen peroxide under professional supervision is safe for teeth and gums.
  • Are there any side effects?

Occasionally, some people experience temporary teeth sensitivity during or after the treatment. These symptoms always disappear within 1-2 days after interruption or completion of the treatment. At smilestudio, we pioneer a zero-sensitivity technique that all but eliminates this side effect.
  • Are OTC products or Internet purchase as safe and effective?

No. Current law prohibits OTC products to contain enough active ingredients for effective teeth whitening. The qualities of Internet purchases are not regulated. They are mostly ineffective and can be harmful to your teeth. For peace of mind, get professional advice and have your teeth whitened only by dentists and dental team registered with the General Dental Council.
